Jin Wen's Reflection

An individual reflection on our personal development in relation to collaboration and communicating as a group.

Our collaboration

  • While doing the assignment, collaboration and communication between my group members and I were good to a large extent.

  • However, I felt that there are some areas could have been worked on and one of it being the distribution of workload for this project. This was because I felt that the workload was unequally distributed whereby some of the group members did more research and was more involved as compared to others.

  • Despite that, we tried our best to meet as a group to discuss the identified needs, solutions and recommendations for our assignment. Most of us also contributed to the discussion by voicing out our opinions and throwing in ideas and providing possible suggestions.

  • Upon coming up with the details on what to include for the website, one of my other group mate and I volunteered to design the layout of the website while the rest of the members were in charge of sorting the details according to the tabs of the website.

Web design

  • As my other group member and I were the ones in charge of designing the website, we communicated within ourselves using Whatsapp and Skype calls to pick the days to meet and create the layout of the website. 

  • Despite our busy schedules, we met during the weekends to edit the layout of the website together. The rest of the members shared our workload by sorting the information which we had previously discussed into the various tabs present on the website. We communicated with each other frequently to check on teach other's updates to find out more about their progression.

What I learned

  • While designing the website, I have learned the importance of listening to my group mate's opinions and taking them into consideration. This is because ultimately, this is a group assignment and every member has a say in it.

  • Initially, when I started to design the website, I had a vision of what I wanted the website to look like. Which was why I was not receptive towards the feedback she gave to me and I would turn down her suggestions. However, I realized that it was not the right thing to do. Instead, I should have been more receptive and take into considerations her ideas.

  • After a few meeting, I became more receptive towards the suggestions which she gave and I took them into consideration.

Overall

Therefore, by being more receptive, we were actually communicating with one another and collaboration is definitely prominent as the "website design" group and the "sorting" group worked together to complete the website as a group.
