Differing perspectives
1. Perspectives of play: How play should be implemented
Teachers: Believes that play should be child-directed. The child has the bigger role in play as it is based on children’s interests, needs and abilities. They want to move towards a more play-based curriculum with open-ended play materials.
Principal: Believes that play should strike a balance between both the teacher-directed and child-directed aspects. The teacher also plays the more prominent role in play as they have to facilitate, plan and assess the children.
2. requirements for play: Skill sets required
Teachers: Believes that the training provided should equip them with the skills to implement play that is emergent from the child’s interests. Therefore, to ensure quality play, teachers have to improve on accommodating play to children, making play more child-directed.
Principal: Believes that in order to improve the quality of play, teachers should be sent for training that equips them with the knowledge on preparation and planning of materials; and the skills needed to facilitate play.
