Judith's Reflection

An individual reflection of the topic selection process

Initial topic

  • Initially, our topic was on Play-Based curriculum. I was incredibly intrigued by this topic as I have always believed that play was an integral part of children's "growing up process" and it was incredibly important for play to be present in many parts of a children's life.

  • To find out that such a curriculum exists and how it is being implemented in other countries, I was incredibly curious to find out how appropriate and how such a curriculum would fit into the current Singapore Early Education landscape.

  • However, as many Singaporean preschools have not yet managed to adopt the play-based curriculum in its entirety, we decided as a group to refocus on our topic on "Learning through Play instead."

Chosen topic

  • Learning through Play encompasses both the idea of a play-based curriculum and the current purposeful play in the curriculum that many centres have been using. We felt that this new topic would allow us to better gather and understand the different perspectives towards a play-based approach and use of play in the classroom.

Why Learning through play?

  • This topic allows us for a wider variety of perspectives which would definitely allow us to better understand where our Singaporean preschools are at, at this point in time in regards to implementing play in the classroom.

  • This topic would also allow us to examine and challenge the current purposeful play centred curriculum and think of ways in which it could be modified or improved, while giving us the opportunity to understand the implications that a play-based curriculum would bring as well.

  • Thus, we decided to change our topic as it would be better and more relevant for us to conduct research on.
