Jin Wen's Reflection
An individual reflection of the topic selection process
Initial Topic
-
Initially, before we researched on more information about our chosen topic, the topic we chose was on play-based curriculum, where the play is child directed.
-
This was because my group and I felt that such a curriculum consists of various benefits for children's development. For example, children's social interactions would be improved as they communicate with one another during play and when the teacher extends the children's learning on a certain topic, which they picked out during play.
-
Furthermore, we also believed that children should not learn through structured methods like teaching through the use of worksheets. By playing, children would not only be able to learn better but at the same time, they would be able to enjoy the entire process of learning as it would be fun.
Chosen Topic
-
However, upon discussions with our teacher and having done more research on the topic of "play-based curriculum, we realized that it was better to have a balance between play and academics.
-
This is because a completely play-based curriculum would not be feasible in the Singapore context due to its culture as well as the parents needs. Whereby Singaporean parents are really concerns about their children's academic and how well they fair in school.
-
Hence, we decided to choose "learning through play" instead of our initial play-based curriculum as our topic of interest for the project.
Overall
With that, I realized that prior to choosing a topic to work on, we should always find out more information about the topic and its feasibility in the Singapore context before moving off to the next step, which is to source out the centre's needs.
