Deborah's Reflection

An individual reflection of the topic selection process

Topic Chosen

  • I chose to embark on the topic of purposeful play as I feel that it is important for children as it benefits their development in many ways. This topic was chosen as I initially felt that childcare centres and kindergartens in Singapore are too academically-based in their curriculum. Therefore, these preschools do not provide much play experiences for the children.

  • From what I have been learning through the course, I understood that not only is play important for children, it also comes in various forms. Based on research, I also found out that play is an ideal way for young children to learn.

What I learned

  • What I have learned from this topic is that in order to implement successful purposeful play, a lot of planning of materials and lessons are involved. This also takes teamwork as it is almost impossible to accomplish it alone as there are just too many things to do.

  • I also realized that it takes more than just the teachers to make purposeful play happen. It also requires the support from the principal and for parents to understand that play is how children learn in order to be able to implement play in the classroom.
